Most hiring processes trust first and verify last. A candidate's résumé drives screening, interviews and the offer. Only then does a background check confirm whether the degree and work history were real.
Late verification is expensive verification
By the time a check comes back with a discrepancy, the organisation has already spent recruiter hours, interview panels and often weeks of calendar time. Worse, the checks themselves are slow and manual. Someone emails a registrar or a former employer and waits. When a check is inconclusive, many teams quietly proceed anyway.
The result is a system where the honest candidate and the fraudulent one travel the same path for most of the funnel.
Move verification to the start
If credentials are verified once, at the source, and carried by the candidate, verification stops being a late-stage gate and becomes an input to screening. That changes three things:
- Recruiters screen on facts. Verified education and employment can be filtered on from the first touch.
- Candidates stop repeating themselves. The same verified record works for every application.
- Institutions verify once. Universities and employers confirm a record one time, instead of answering the same request again and again.
Where engineering helps: connecting your ATS and HRMS to verification sources through APIs, so verified results arrive automatically with an audit trail instead of by email.
What to ask of any verification approach
- Is the credential confirmed with the issuer, or just uploaded by the candidate?
- Who controls sharing: the professional, or a third party?
- Can your ATS or HRMS consume the result automatically?
- Is there an audit trail showing when and how each item was verified?
